Best Free AI Companions 2026: 7 Apps Actually Usable Free

"Free" is the most abused word in this category. Of the 153 non-adult products we track, 145 advertise a free tier — that is 95% — but the word covers four completely different things: genuinely unlimited use, a daily quota big enough to build a habit, a demo so small it exists only to make the paywall feel like relief, and "free" in the sense that the software is free and you supply the model.

This list only includes products where we verified what the free tier actually gives you. Nothing here is a paid placement, and the ordering is by how much free usage you get before you have to decide anything.

Four questions that decide whether "free" is real

Before the list, the test we applied — you can run it yourself on any product in ten minutes:

  1. Can you use it tomorrow? A free tier that runs out in one evening is a trial, not a free tier.
  2. Is the thing you came for behind the wall? Many products give free chat and paywall memory, voice or image generation. Free chat with no memory is a different product from the one being advertised.
  3. Does it need a card? A card requirement is a churn funnel, not a gate. Several entries below need no card at all.
  4. What does "unlimited" exclude? Character.AI's free chat is unlimited and still carries mid-chat ads, a daily swipe cap and a currency. Unlimited is a claim about messages, not about experience.

We keep the verified free-tier terms on each listing entry (checked 2026-09-14 through 2026-09-30), because this is the field vendors change most often and describe least clearly.

Tier 1 — actually unlimited, or effectively so

Pi — the only major companion with no paid tier at all

Pi is the cleanest answer in this category: free, no usage limit, no subscription, no card. Voice works, and it is included rather than metered. It is also the most consistently rated empathetic model in free conversation — the thing it does well is listen, not roleplay.

The honest limitation is scope. There is no image generation, no character library, and active memory is shallow compared with products built around long-term continuity. Pi is not trying to be a companion platform; it is a conversation partner that happens to cost nothing. If your need is "someone to talk to tonight, and I am not paying", this is the strongest entry on the list.

Character.AI — the most generous free tier, with visible costs

Unlimited free text chat, over 20 million community characters, and prose quality that is still the best in the category. On volume alone, no paid product here beats what Character.AI gives away.

What it costs you is attention and control. Free users sit through ads mid-conversation, hit a daily swipe cap on regenerating replies, and meet a Charms currency designed to convert you. The content filter is the strictest among major sites and does not lift on the paid tier — c.ai+ at $9.99/mo ($7.92/mo annually) buys speed and priority, not latitude.

SillyTavern — free forever, because you bring the model

An open-source companion interface (AGPL-3.0) that runs on desktop or in a browser and connects to whatever model you point it at — a hosted API you pay per token, or a local model that costs nothing but electricity. Memory, personas, group chat and lorebooks are all there, and you control each one.

The price of "free" is competence: setup is technical, there is no mobile app, and the quality of the experience is the quality of the model you connect. This is where the advanced users in this category actually live, and it is the only entry here with no vendor that can change the terms on you.

Tier 2 — a daily quota you can live inside

HammerAI — 600 cloud messages a day, unlimited on your own hardware

The most generous metered free tier we have verified, from HammerAI: 600 cloud messages per day, plus unlimited chat if you run models locally, plus group chat, lorebooks and personas — no card. Pro tiers start at $9/mo for larger cloud limits.

600 messages a day is not a demo; it is more than most people use. The catch is the same as SillyTavern's: the unlimited half depends on hardware you own.

Hakko AI — 30 minutes of voice a day

Hakko is built for gaming: it reads what is on your screen and roleplays along. The free tier gives 30 minutes of voice per day plus roleplay mode, which is a real allowance for a voice-first product — most competitors meter voice in seconds during a trial.

The limits are structural rather than stingy: romantic mode sits behind the $19.99/mo Ultra tier, and there is no live voice call. If screen-aware roleplay is the specific thing you want, 30 minutes a day is enough to find out whether it works for you.

Joyland AI — 10 credits a day

An anime-leaning community hub: thousands of user-made characters, image generation inside the chat, no card required. Ten credits a day is enough for a short session, not a long one, and image generation burns them faster than chatting does.

It is on this list because the free tier is honest about being small rather than pretending to be generous, and because it is one of the few free entries with image generation included. NSFW content requires toggling the mature setting — it is not on by default.

Coze — 10 credits a day, three bots

Strictly speaking Coze is a bot-building platform rather than a companion app: no-code workflows, plugins, publishing to eight-plus channels, an open-source Studio for self-hosting. Ten credits a day and three bots on the free tier; premium from $9/mo.

It earns a place because a lot of people who want a "free AI companion" actually want to build one — a character with a specific personality and specific knowledge. Coze is the cheapest route to that, and its free tier is usable rather than symbolic.

How to use free tiers without wasting a month

Run two, not seven. Free tiers are designed to be evaluated in a day and abandoned in a week. Pick one unlimited product and one metered product, use both for a week, and you will learn more than from signing up for everything.

Test memory specifically, on day three. Almost every product feels good in session one, because session one is what the free tier is optimised for. Come back on day three and ask it something you told it on day one. That single test separates products that are usable free from products that merely start free.

Do not judge a paid product by its free tier. Replika's free tier is thin and its annual plan at $69.99 ($5.83/mo equivalent) is one of the better deals in the category. Conversely, a generous free tier often signals that the paid tier sells something other than conversation. The two questions are separate.

Watch for the memory wall, not the message wall. Among the 145 free tiers we track, the most common pattern is not a low message count — it is unlimited or near-unlimited chat paired with memory, voice or images held back for subscribers. If long-term continuity is why you are here, the free tier of most products will not tell you whether the paid one is any good.

Disclosure: the team that runs this directory also builds SoulChat, an AI companion product with its own free tier. It is not included in this list, is not a paid placement on this site, and appears in the directory on the same terms as every other entry.

How this was checked. Free-tier terms, prices and platform coverage were verified against each vendor's own pricing flow between 2026-09-14 and 2026-09-30, and are recorded on each listing entry with its verification date. Where a vendor describes limits vaguely, we record what we could confirm and say so rather than paraphrasing the marketing page.
